History of Learning Together:
Learning Together has been serving the young children of Wake County and their families since 1969.
The program has been inclusive since the beginning and has always been committed to serving children who are at risk
for or diagnosed with a developmental disability as well as children who are typically developing.
The program was incorporated in 1975 as Learning Together through funding from the Junior League of Raleigh.
In 1982, the Office of Day Care Services of the North Carolina Department of Human Resources officially
named Learning Together the State Demonstration Model for Mainstreaming. The center provided training to day care
providers across the state and because Learning Together provides an effective model for services for all children,
many programs in North Carolina have modeled their services on the Learning Together philosophy of INTERDEPENDENCY.
Governor James B. Hunt chose Learning Together in March 1993 to be the site where he made the announcement of his
SmartStart initiative. The SmartStart initiative has a history of innovation and quality services to young children
and their families in North Carolina.
In March 2001, Learning Together received a Five Star rating from the North Carolina Division of Child Development.
A Five Star rating is the highest rating awarded by the state of North Carolina. The state certification was
instituted in September 2000 to measure educational program standards, facility compliance history, and staff
education standards. This rating affirms that Learning Together provides quality services to children in Wake
County as it has been doing for over 30 years.
In 2002, Learning Together's Developmental Day Care Center was granted accreditation by the National Association
for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). This prestigious recognition has been achieved by only seven percent of more
than 8,000 early childhood programs nationwide. In 2002, Learning Together also began a new Child Mental Health Initiative to provide comprehensive
services to children ages birth to five years who have demonstrated serious social, emotional, behavioral and/or mental
health concerns. The program currently receives funding from the Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust, the Triangle United Way, and the Junior League of Raleigh.
