In Memory of Learning Together Founder, Julia McLean Williams

juliaIt is with sadness that we share the loss of JULIA McLEAN WILLIAMS, visionary and founder of Learning Together, Inc.

We want to celebrate her life as she was one who celebrated life through her service to others.

Julia Williams brought her vision for a program that embraced children of all abilities to a reality in Raleigh at Fairmont United Methodist Church as a half-day preschool program that included children with developmental delays. Julia who creatively integrated her experiences as public school teacher in the rural South and as a missionary with the Methodist Church and Director of a School in South America for 10 years to develop what would become Learning Together, a program which pioneered the “mainstreaming” of children. Julia took the concept a step further with a fully inclusive concept guided by an educational philosophy of “Interdependency” and a focus on the positive self-esteem of children as the foundation for all learning.

Born November 25, 1928, Julia passed away on May 7, 2015 at her home in Falls Church, Virginia.

Julia lived a life of service to her fellow man as a missionary, visionary educator, in addition to being the founder of Learning Together in Raleigh. She served as President of the North Carolina Conference of the Board of Missions and the Mission Society for United Methodists. She was a master organizer and fervent leader of many missions all over the world to build schools, hospitals, and churches, which changed the lives of countless people. Her work with Enterprise Development to provide low cost loans to young Christian entrepreneurs in developing countries brought hope and livelihoods to many needy and deserving recipients.
